All About Knots of Love
All About Knots of Love is part of YGB’s Crafting for Charity series. We hope to inspire more crafters to donate their time, energy, and creativity to these worthy causes. To read the other posts in this series, please click here.
Knots of Love provides hand-knit and crocheted beanies to anyone who lost their hair for medical reasons free of charge. In 2013 they began providing baby blankets to NICU patients. The non-profit was founded in 2007 by Christine Fabiani. She got the idea after speaking with her cancer-survivor friend who pointed out how itchy wigs feel against bald heads. According to the website, “Chemotherapy drugs cause heads to become tender and heads tend to become sore after a long day of wearing a wig. Our caps provide respite and comfort, like a cozy pair of slippers or a soft robe. Most importantly, the simple act of a patient receiving a cap made by that someone who they have never met and knowing that someone took hours of their time to make a cap by hand makes patients feel loved and less alone when going through these extremely challenging times.”
As of 2019, they donated over 444,000 beanies and blankets. Currently, they donate over 4,000 baby blankets and chemo caps per month!
How You Can Help
Knitters and Crocheters
There are tons of patterns on Knots of Love’s website for chemo caps and baby blankets. They are all free if being used for donated items. If you choose to use any pattern for other reasons, Knots of Love requests a small donation – similar to purchasing a pattern! Donated chemo caps must meet certain requirements. They must be: new, seamless, made from approved yarns (click here for the approved yarn list), fragrance-free, smoke-free, pet hair-free, and washable. Click here for the full guidelines.
Knots of Love also sells kits for knitting and crocheting beanies! The kits include goodies like approved yarn, measuring tape, and buttons. Also included with the kits is an amazing PDF pamphlet with great how-to guide and links to videos. Click here to find out more about their awesome kits!
